Products that feel rich and are a pleasure to use should be part of everyone's day. Fragrant bars of luscious soaps have always brought me sheer delight. Creamy lather, soothing scents and soft skin make my heart smile.
Unfortunately, the most consistent quality I achieved from most of the soaps I purchased in stores and malls just gave me inflammation. Chemicals and detergents run rampant in pretty packages disguised as luxurious bath bars. Red welts seemed to grow across my arms as I scratched my aggravated skin after a shower with a new “soap”. I thought one day I would find the perfect bath luxury that would delight my every sense without sacrificing the upper layer of my skin. When my search rendered failing results, I began investigating how to make my own perfect bar of soap.
My quest for the perfect bar has been an adventure. I tend to be a research maniac, which explains why I studied the process of soap making for about a year before making the first batch. I think it was more about nerve than disappointment. I really struggled with the idea that sodium hydroxide (lye) was a necessary element in the creation of soap. I was in denial that such a harsh caustic material could participate in the forming of such a soothing product.

Well, I got over it, and made my first batch of all natural handmade soap. Those rough cut rectangles of fresh soap saved my skin. The dry irritated patches of skin on my body that I thought were normal were gone with the water down the drain. I have enjoyed many lavish baths and even showers are a luxurious experience for me now, as I emerge clean, soft, relaxed and scented. I have been crafting soap almost ten years now and find what I do to be a delicate balance of art and science. My recipes are a combination of practical knowledge and sheer instinct. I have learned just what it takes to create a creamy lather and fragrant bubbles. Healthy, organic oils have taken the place of basic soap making ingredients. Smooth curved edges have replaced asymmetrical shapes to allow a soap that fits your hand beautifully. Perhaps I am finally on my way to soap perfection.
One thing I know for sure is that I have realized more than a perfect bar of soap. I have brought to fruition an attitude of mindful beauty. Basic skin care should be natural and effective, while rewarding many of your senses. Rituals like a bath or shower should not endanger our bodies or our earth. Recognizing the effect inferior products have on my skin and the environment has caused me to reach beyond the store shelves. Creating awareness about the things I consider questionable allows me to reclaim my beauty inside and out. I hope you will feed your mind, body and skin with the knowledge and the products that radiate who you are and what is better for all of us….
