The Karite Tree grows in Africa and produces a fruit that contains a nut, which is the source of shea butter. The rich handcrafted shea butter that we use in our organic soaps comes from West Ghana , Africa .
The Karite Tree blooms for two months in the summer and produces a dark green fruit, which contains a nut with a hard white kernel. The nuts fall to the ground when they are ripe, and women from West African villages travel miles from home to gather the fruit.
After the nuts are carried home, the fruit is inspected. The nuts are cracked open and boiled to reveal the shea butter, which is then kneaded until the right consistency is achieved. It is this natural handcrafted process that allows the healing properties of this
extraordinary butter to remain viable. Cheaper means of cultivating shea butter exist, however these include solvent extraction which compromises the integrity of the butter.
We purchase this unrefined raw butter as close to the source as feasibly possible for several reasons. Our supplier works directly with three particular villages to ensure a better quality of life for the tribes as well as the production of premium butter. Three new wells have been drilled in these villages to provide clean water. A school has been built and books have been purchased. A hospital wing has also been constructed to provide medical care. We are happy to provide our customers with the absolute best quality shea butter all the while knowing that we are helping these villages improve their quality of life.
